26 Years of Strong Support with a Warm Heart

Sam Cottone knows from his brother who fostered and then adopted five children, some victims of abuse and others with developmental disabilities, how inspiration can come from helping people reach their potential. “They’re all a real success story, and that’s what inspired me to get involved with St. Louis Center.” Sam bought some land in Oakland Township in 1996 and opened Twin Lakes Golf Course, adding a clubhouse and swim club not long after. His friend, Mike Chirco, told him about the good work at St. Louis Center. After visiting the Center, Sam, Mike, and good friend Joe Maniaci, started the Dad and Lad Golf Outing, now in its 26th year.

Known for its wonderful course, delicious dinner, and wonderful auction items, the event has become a “must” for many attendees. This year, Sara, a St. Louis Center resident, serenaded diners with her recorder, followed by Jerome, another resident, sharing his amazing baritone voice with a beautiful rendition of “Blue Moon”. Attendees were thrilled, as were the performers with the accolades they received.

Auction items included everything from golf equipment, fire pits, bicycles, and even a Barbie tree in homage to the current popular film.  There is something for everyone, making this one of the most anticipated events of the year. Over more than two and a half decades this event has raised nearly a million and a half dollars, providing many St. Louis Center residents joy of living in a community that supports them in enjoying the fullness of life in an integrated community, and their families the peace of knowing their loved ones are at home.

As Sam said many years ago, “Since we can’t physically go out and help… we can be here to financially help them.”  St. Louis Center residents and families say, THANK YOU to everyone involved over the years with the Dad and Lad event, including many special sponsors!
