A Joyous Celebration!
One of life’s great joys is spending time and celebrating with loved ones. On Sunday, June 9th, Mike Ashworth was surprised and delighted by a very special visit from his mother Barbara and their dear friend Cindy Samoray. It was Mike’s 60th birthday! After dinner, Mike and his roommates enjoyed a cake that Cindy had specially decorated for him. Mike’s father sent a delicious fresh fruit arrangement that they all thoroughly enjoyed. There were presents to open and songs to sing!
Living to the Fullest…
Mike is one of our longest staying residents here at St. Louis Center. Each year that we celebrate with him has been such a joy. After moving from Kentucky, Barb had Mike while living in Ann Arbor. After finding out that Mike had I/DD, Barb learned about St. Louis Center through a friend and decided to enroll him. Barb met Cindy in 1992 and she quickly became a close family friend. Cindy eventually became Mike’s legal guardian and has maintained a close relationship with their family.

Mike has always enjoyed visiting home to spend time with Barb. Over the last few years Mike has needed to stay more full time at the Center. While this transition has been difficult for both Mike and Barb, they still make time to see each other regularly, specifically during birthdays! In recent years Barb and Cindy have made sure to visit each year to celebrate. During Mike’s 50th birthday the two brought a limo over and gave Mike a fun ride around town!
In addition to Mike’s momentous birthday, Barb recently celebrated 90 years and mentioned how fortunate she has been to have the support system that she has, including her family, friends and the staff here at St. Louis Center.

Times like these spent with family and friends are so valuable and fulfilling, for residents, visitors, and staff. We are so blessed to have been able to celebrate this amazing moment with Mike, his family, and his friends. It is always a joy to celebrate the large milestones of our residents and staff here at St. Louis Center!
