On August 17th, St. Louis Center and its supporters participated in the 37th annual Memorial Golf Outing. Since 1987, the Center has had the honor of remembering an outstanding individual in the community through this event. This year, we were thankful to honor George Merkel at a very successful event.

George Merkel

George was a farmer, amongst many other things. He helped provide produce for the residents back in the days of St. Louis School. George grew potatoes, onions, green beans, summer squash, and apples. He sold his produce at the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market, but he always had plenty to help feed the residents. George was happy to provide the St. Louis Center with poinsettias for Christmas each year.

He was tireless in giving his time to the local community. He was an active member of the Chelsea Knights of Columbus, Cardinal O’Hara 4th Degree Assembly, Ann Arbor Market Growers Association, Sylvan Twp. Board Trustee, Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners, and served as a Tractor Pull judge at the Chelsea Community Fair.

St. Louis Center is extremely grateful to our supporters, sponsors, and volunteers; we feel truly blessed. A special thanks to Pierce Lake Golf Course for welcoming us with open arms for another year, We also thank the generous Nadeau family for providing a delicious catered breakfast to start the day.

Again, St. Louis Center would like to thank our gracious sponsors. Without you we could not bring the Memorial Golf Outing to the community.

After enjoying the delicious breakfast, Golfers prepared themselves for an early morning shotgun start at 9 am. Soon after, they were off to play an enjoyable golf scramble. The threat of rain was heavy on the air that day, but it only ended up raining for “about one hole,” golfers said. Around 11 am, a lunch of hot dogs was offered at the turnaround and a dinner of Italian sausage and burgers was served at 3 pm; our wonderful volunteers prepared each of these delicious meals.

As the golfers enjoyed their dinner, Joe Yekulis took up the microphone to announce the winners and special thanks. Overall, the team with the best score was the 5th Nadeau team: Brad Nadeau, Chris Nadeau, Alex Campbell, and Joe Imesch. Congratulations!
