Travelers Approaching the Swiss Alps

This May, thirty-six joyful travelers embarked on the unforgettable “Dream Cruise III,” journeying by plane, boat, bus, and train from Amsterdam to Milan, Italy. This third journey in the series was organized by long-time St. Louis Center supporters, aimed at exploring the history of St. Louis Guanella, fostering camaraderie among supporters, and simply having fun.

The Origins of the Dream Tour
The “Dream Tour” series was conceived by Norm Neuman, a dedicated supporter who has championed the St. Louis Center for decades. Inspired by his own enriching experiences in Europe, Norm envisioned sharing these adventures with others while visiting significant historical sites tied to the Servants of Charity, the parent organization of St. Louis Center. Partnering with Cathy Bilinski,from Corporate Travel, and Trisha Eblin, a Cruise Planners franchise owner, they created a journey experience combining smart travel, great venues, and a small stipend benefiting the Center. The success of the first trip led to the planning of subsequent journeys, with Dream Tour III eagerly anticipated and quickly sold out for May 2024.
Exploring Europe’s Finest Destinations
Neighborhoods in Cologne, Germany
The adventure began with a warm welcome dinner in Amsterdam, followed by boarding the Viking Cruise “Rolf.” For seven days, travelers enjoyed the exquisite culinary talents of onboard chefs and scenic views along the Rhine River, with daily excursions to top-rated sites. Highlights included a tulip-time tour of Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands and a walking tour of the picturesque neighborhoods in Cologne, Germany.
Alpine Adventures in Switzerland
After disembarking in Basel, the group traveled by luxury motor coach through Switzerland, reaching the stunning village of Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. As they ascended, temperatures dropped, and travelers layered up to see the majestic Matterhorn and one of the region’s impressive glaciers. The next day, some explored the snow-covered mountains via a cogwheel train, while others delved into the historic charm of Zermatt.
A Scenic Journey on the Glacier Express
Early the next morning, the group boarded the renowned Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz, experiencing some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery en route to Lake Como, Italy. This scenic journey offered spectacular views, much appreciated from the comfort of the train, especially during the switchback descent down the mountain range in the snow!
Discovering St. Louis Guanella’s Heritage
In Italy, the travelers navigated by bus and van through winding switchbacks to reach San Giovanni Battista Parish, the birthplace of Fr. Louis Guanella. Here, Fr. Enzo led a mass in the beautiful church, followed by a sumptuous Italian feast at Stella Alpina. The journey continued with visits to the Fr. Guanella Museum and the Servants of Charity Motherhouse, where participants learned about the remarkable life and miracles of Fr. Guanella, celebrated with a “light” lunch provided by the Brothers.
Culmination in Milan and Bellagio
After two weeks of delightful company, stunning landscapes, and rich history, Dream Tour III concluded with a ferry ride across Lake Como to Bellagio. Travelers enjoyed a day of shopping and relaxation, soaking in the Italian warmth. The final stop was Milan, where they explored the extraordinary cathedral, including the statue of St. Louis Guanella, pointed out by Fr. Enzo, one of just 3,400 statues on the cathedral!
A Trip to Remember
Dream Tour III was not only a fantastic journey but also a successful fundraiser, raising over $33,000 for the St. Louis Center. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants who made this trip memorable and supported the Center’s mission.
