St. Louis Center residents, staff, and community gather for a Latino dinner and Mariachi entertainment on June 5, 2024
Through grants funded by the Chelsea Community Foundation and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, St. Louis Center has launched new projects to bring cultural awareness programs to the Center and the surrounding communities. These free classes and events are being held to help educate the residents, staff, and community on cultural diversity issues facing the world. The Center held one of these events on June 5, 2024.
The theme of the evening was Latino culture. Paco and Millie Lopez, longtime friends of the Center, arranged the meal and entertainment from their circle of Latino friends. The Ozorio family prepared a feast that delighted the eyes and taste buds! The menu included salad, tamales, street tacos, fajitas, rice, beans, and more. There was hardly enough room on the plate even to get a small taste of each culinary delight.
As everyone was finishing their meal, a traditional Mariachi band made their way into the gym in full costume. Musicians included three guitarists and a trumpet player and every foot in the house was tapping to the beat! The residents and community members enjoyed the rhythms and they even did some dancing.
The Center is very grateful to the Lopez and Ozorio families for taking all the time in preparation to share an evening of wonderful tastes and sounds featuring their amazing culture and to the Chelsea and surrounding community members who came to enjoy the evening and add to the fun experienced by everyone. Gracias!
