Empowering our Residents

St. Louis Center is dedicated to empowering our residents to live their lives to the fullest, fostering a sense of dignity and purpose in everything they do. Central to this mission is our commitment to exploring new opportunities that inspire and uplift. We’ve embraced Montessori principles, encouraging our residents to step outside their comfort zones and engage with the world around them— attending community events, exploring new activities, or taking part in special outings.

A Special Collaboration

One such experience came through a collaboration with The Encore Theatre Company in Dexter, Michigan, who graciously hosted “A Thoroughly Friendly Day,” a day when those in the community with sensory sensitivities, neurodivergent conditions, dementia, and other special needs could come together for snacks, socializing, and a theatrical production of Annie.

A Warm Welcome

On Thursday, December 12th, a large group of residents, accompanied by several dedicated Direct Care Workers, made their way to The Encore Theatre. Upon arrival, they were welcomed with gift bags to fill with snacks and fidget toys to help create a comfortable and sensory-friendly experience. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, further enhanced by the presence of Lucy, a Golden Retriever service dog, and several vendor tables—including one for St. Louis Center, where we proudly shared our mission with the community.

An Engaging and Uplifting Performance

The performance was dynamic and engaging, captivating the audience for the full two-and-a-half hours. The songs brought laughter and joy, while the characters’ emotional depth drew empathy from all who watched. Annie is a timeless story of hope, resilience, and the power of optimism. It was a truly special experience for our residents.

A Memorable Meet-and-Greet

The night culminated with a meet-and-greet in the lobby, where the residents had the chance to interact with the cast. For many, this part of the evening was the highlight, even surpassing the performance itself in terms of excitement. Tony, for example, was overjoyed to meet the actor who played Daddy Warbucks and the actress who portrayed Miss Hannigan. He was one of the last residents to leave, continuing his conversations with the cast long after most of the other residents had loaded onto the busses. Kristin was equally thrilled to meet the performers, receiving many heartfelt hugs as she connected with them off-stage. Lee shared in the excitement, bringing along copies of the recent article about him from St. Louis Center’s Year-End Appeal. He proudly handed out postcards and pictures of himself to the cast members, eager to share his story.

A Heartwarming Reminder

The entire day was an inspiring reminder of the power of community, the joy of shared experiences, and the importance of providing our residents with opportunities to engage in the world with dignity, joy, and hope. Thank you to The Encore Theatre Company for making this special day happen!
