On August 1st, twenty residents in the Independent Living Program at St. Louis Center participated in a cooking class offered by Janelle Kantola of Michigan State University Extension, a program designed to foster continued skill-building.

Janelle has been with MSU Extension since 2013. As a Community Nutrition Instructor, she partners with other local non-profit organizations around Washtenaw County that serve income-eligible audiences. She offers a variety of engaging, interactive, and fun programs related to health, nutrition, and physical activity. Through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education Program (SNAP-Ed), Janelle is able to offer all of her programs free of charge.

Janelle taught the residents how to carefully measure dry and liquid ingredients, and properly clean and slice fruit and vegetables.  She provided a step-by-step guide that is easy for the residents to follow.

You can find more resources on their website.

Many of the residents worked on these skills during Independence College at the Center, so they were very receptive to sharpening their skills. Many had questions. They all enjoyed the fun and fellowship that cooking collaboratively affords.

They worked together to create a mouth-watering bowl of mango salsa. After they finished cleaning up from the preparation, they opened a few bags of corn chips and enjoyed the fruits of their labor.

Janelle plans to offer similar classes at the Center for the residents as well as the wider community.
