AktionCon 2024
On October 11-12th nine St. Louis Center residents attended the Michigan Aktion Club Conference at Camp Storer in Jackson. Aktion Club is a service club sponsored by Kiwanis for individuals with disabilities. The mission is to provide adults living with disabilities an opportunity to use their abilities, develop leadership skills, and serve their communities.
Time for Work
At this conference St. Louis Center Aktion Club members gave a presentation about their favorite project this year: their annual Christmas Card Fundraiser. They explained the process of hand-making the Christmas artwork, folding the cards, packaging them, and selling them at churches in the community. Through this project, they raised $500 for Faith in Action in Chelsea and $500 for the animal shelter in Jackson. This year they sold out quickly and had to order more cards.
Club members also had the experience of hearing about the service projects that other clubs from around the state completed. These presentations inspired them to dream up some new ideas for future projects for the SLC Aktion Club.
Jacqui Pampuch and Lisa Roberts tied for 1st place in the poster competition! They beautifully illustrated their favorite service projects and the charities the Club has donated to.
Club members also attended leadership training to learn more about the specific roles that they hold on the board of their club. An important action item was electing a new governor of the Michigan Aktion Club.
Time for Fun
During the Conference, all participants helped make care packages for first responders. There were also many fun activities for participants to engage in with their peers, socializing with members of other clubs from around the state. This included: the campfire activity with S’Mores sponsored by the SLC club, a talent show, an ice cream social, and the big dance which they look forward to each year.
The residents said that they had a blast at the conference and have some great ideas for what they can do with Aktion Club next year!
Congratulations to St. Louis Center’s Aktion Club leaders, and thank you Kiwanis!
