A message from Andy Shmina…

June 11, 2024

Dear Travel companions, It’s been a few weeks since we returned from our wonderful trip through Europe with Fr Enzo. I hope you are settling back into a normal rhythm of life.

After our tour of Como and Fraciscio, Italy, and recollecting the life of Fr Guanella, I was reminded that one of the charisms of the Servants of Charity is to pray for those suffering and dying today that they have a holy death. The model of a holy death is Saint Joseph who died surrounded by Jesus and Mary.

On August 9, 2010, we had to rush our son, Peter to UM Hospital. My thought was ‘we need a priest’. My Parish priest was out of town. Providentially I had just joined the Community Advisory Council of the Saint Louis Center. So I called Fr. Joe Rinaldi. He immediately started prayers for Peter at the Pious Union of Saint Joseph in Grass Lake. Fr. Fortunato Turati was at the hospital within half an hour. He prayed with Peter, anointed him, gave him the sacrament of anointing of the sick and spent the day with our family at the hospital. Later in the day, Peter passed away.

By way of offering thanksgiving for all the Servants of Charity have done for our family on that day and over the next 14 years, the fund we set up to remember our son Peter, the Peter Shmina Memorial fund is matching donations to the Saint Louis Center endowment, dollar for dollar up to $50,000.

Thank you for your friendship, prayers and support. We had a wonderful time with you all on the Dream Tour III !
