SUMMARY:1\,000 Flowers Could Bloom
DESCRIPTION:All plants will flower if provided the right conditions – soil with nutrients\, sunlight\, water\, pollination. Human beings realize their fullest potential – much like the blooming of flowers – when certain conditions are met. One of these is a strong sense of self\, an awareness and acceptance of who we are\, where we are from. We have a better understanding of the broader human condition when we have a strong sense of self. This leads to acceptance of others and an appreciation of our differences. \nCultural awareness begins with an understanding of our place in the world\, how we are influenced by the cultural groups we belong to. Culture influences how we think and how we act. If we look at our cultural identity as we would an iceberg – 10% of it is visible\, 90% is under the waterline – which parts of us are visible above ‘the waterline’ and which parts below? To understand our own cultural identity\, we need to look below the surface. And we need to understand our own cultural identity before we can understand others’. \n \nTogether with the residents of St. Louis Center and the wider community of interested individuals\, educator and clay artist Eli Zemper will engage folks with and without disabilities to create ceramic flowers with metal stems. \nEach flower will have a center – called the ‘pistil’ – that will be stamped\, using stencils\, with words and images that describe the artist’s cultural identity. During this evening clay workshop held in the SLC gym\, Eli will engage all participants in discussions that help them explore their cultures. She will then lead them through the process of creating their unique ceramic flower. \nThanks to a generous grant from the Chelsea Community Foundation\, the residents of St. Louis Center have been on a year-long journey of cultural discovery. This event will be the capstone of the cultural awareness program. \nSt. Louis Center is pleased to invite you to the campus Wednesday\, February 26\, 2025 at 6:00pm to participate in this exclusive opportunity.

SUMMARY:Kevin George Memorial Golf Outing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 23rd annual golf outing to keep Kevin’s memory alive!\nKevin was a former St. Louis Center employee. \n\nKevin was a courageous\, compassionate\, humorous\, and loving young man. He touched the hearts of all who knew him and truly blessed our lives with his presence. He was born with a defective heart\, and after numerous operations\, he was given a second chance at life with a heart transplant at the age of 9. His new heart gave him 12.5 years of life he would not have had otherwise. He lived a very healthy\, optimistic\, and normal life considering the many complications that surround an organ transplant.  Kevin was an avid golfer and a loyal UofM fan (wear UofM attire if you desire). \nWhile attending Jackson Community College\, Kevin worked part-time at various jobs but found his true niche in life working with the young boys at St. Louis Center. Kevin passed away October 21\, 2000\, at the age of 21 after a brief illness from complications of his heart transplant. He is truly missed by those privileged to have known him. \nThis is a wonderful chance to share memories of Kevin and have fun golfing for the benefit of others. This event will raise money for the Kevin George Memorial Trust Fund to benefit: \n\nMichigan Congenital Heart Center Save a Heart\nGift of Life (Organ Procurement Agency)\nSt. Louis Center\nEast Jackson Community Schools – East Jackson Scholarship Fund\n1st Congregational Church\n\nWhere: Lakeland Hills Golf Course\n5119 Page Ave\nJackson\, MI 49201 \nWhen: September 7\, 2025\n9:00 AM shotgun start \nThis golf outing is a 4 person scramble including 18 holes with a cart.
