July Summer Programs a Hit at SLC

This year at St. Louis Center, Program Director Rick Visel and Training Coordinator Christine Stehlik responded to the challenge of keeping residents busy during the summer by designing programs with specific goals and objectives that would also be fun and entertaining. Daily activities were planned to keep residents active, and special events were planned once a week. “It gives them something to look forward to on a weekly basis, and they actually get excited as each event gets closer,” said Stehlik. “Along with these weekly special events, we try to take them on two outings per week. They went to a Tiger game in June, and they especially enjoy going to dinner and a movie.”

The special events that Stehlik plans actually have a purpose attached. The Fishing Derby was a leisure activity, and the Whiffle Ball World Series was a recreational/physical event.  Water Wars was a social event, and Do You Think You Can Dance was to enhance their creativity. Aside from the positive physical/psychological advantages the resident get from creative play time, the most important thing to the residents, is that they’re just, “having fun.”

St. Louis Center’s 16th Annual Golf & Glory Dinner and Outing Enjoys Record Attendance and Success

Now in its sixteenth year, the St. Louis Center Golf and Glory Outing has combined forces with Paesano's Restaurant and U of M Golf Course in Ann Arbor to make this one of the premier golfing events in Washtenaw County. Starting with a simple spaghetti dinner at Paesano's on Monday, June 21st and concluding with a premium golf outing on Tuesday, June 22nd, the friends and benefactors of St. Louis Center raised nearly $50,000 to benefit the developmentally disabled children and adult residents who call St. Louis Center their home.

According to event co-chair Norm Neuman, "Our event was a huge success this year, and we had our biggest attendance ever. The Monday night dinner was a sell-out, and we had a full course of 144 golfers for the outing. We can't thank Mike and Bridget Roddy and the staff at Paesano's enough for all that they've done for us to support both of these events through their dinner and catering. This year's golf outing also included several new celebrities, including recent Michigan graduates Mike Hart (Colts), Pierre woods (Patriots), and former Michigan All-American quarterback Rick Leach."

The highlights of the events were the musicians who performed at the Paesano's dinner; including modern acoustic guitarists Bill Dutcher of Phoenix, AZ, and Duffy King of Metro Detroit; and the eighteen sports celebrities who turned out for the golf outing. St. Louis Center would like to give special recognition to Foresters Financial Services for their corporate sponsorship of the Paesano's dinner; former Detroit Lions great Tom Nowatzke for coordinating our celebrities; Piston's play-by-play announcer George Blaha for another year as celebrity chair; David Helmer for another year auctioneering; and former Denver Bronco and founder of the event Bill Wagner and wife Nancy for their sixteen years of support. The State Council of the Michigan Knights of Columbus also presented a $20,000 check to St. Louis Center on behalf of the Knights of Michigan.

Meijer Gives Bicycle Shopping Spree

When you think of summer fun, what activities come to mind?  Riding bikes, playing with squirt guns, and blowing soap bubbles into the wind?  Thanks to Ben Negron, Director of Meijer on Zeeb Road, and his Assistant, Kimberly Valentine, residents of St. Louis Center will enjoy all of these activities and many more this summer.  After reading an appeal in St. Louis Center's newsletter for new and gently used bicycles, Mr. Negron and Ms. Valentine called St. Louis Center and asked staff to create a bicycle and summer fun wish list.  On June 14th, three residents and two staff members were presented a $950 check from Meijer, then headed to the colorful bicycle aisle with their shopping carts.  They had a wonderful time and shared a lot of laughter choosing 6 new children's bicycles, helmets, spare tires and inner tubes, as well as outdoor toys and sporting equipment.  Calculating costs, purchasing, and loading the gifts into the St. Louis Center van were followed by a refreshing cold drink.  Mr. Negron, who is interested in bringing the Special Olympics to Ann Arbor, will soon tour St. Louis Center to discuss our program needs as well as our involvement with Special Olympics.  Thank you Zeeb Road Meijer! Chelsea – Just in time for the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on June 12, members of the Knights of Columbus created a beautiful new garden for the statue of Our Lady at St. Louis Center. Men of the Irish Hills Council #6223 attend mass every Wednesday morning at St. Louis Center and saw the need to honor our Blessed Mother. This was also a way for them to thank the Servants of Charity for their service to the community.
